Ridge of Saurat - Ariège

At the parking, we immediately access the magnificent view of the first peaks of Ariège. We start by crossing the stream of the Courbière and then continue with a shaded climb under a beech forest. We will start by discovering the orris of Carla to reach Pla de Labinas, splendid estive crossed by the torrent of Soulcem. A short stop at the waterfall Labinas will prevail. The climb to the pond is tough but what a reward to finally discover the three ponds of the Garbelle before descending back to the Orris.

I propose you a breath of fresh air for hikers. A classic that we never tire of doing! Starting from the car park of Massada (Auzat), we will climb about 1000 meters by a steep but healthy trail. We will progressively leave the forest for the rhododendrons before reaching the first ponds of Bassiès where we picnic. The descent will be by a path on the mountainside to enjoy a breathtaking view of the stream of Bassiès.

We will continue to climb slowly to reach the Riutort pass from where we will begin our descent to the Rulhe refuge. Then, it will only remain to go down gently to return to Laparan.

Here is a hike for experienced hikers well used to the mountains. We’ll swallow more than 1,000 vertical drop over a distance of 16 km. So don’t be afraid of the effort to take advantage of this great tour. Departing from Port de l’Hers (1517m), we will start with a steep climb on the slopes of Mont Ceint (2088m) with the Trois Seigneurs massif behind us. We will take advantage of the variety of a Natura 2000 classified site. We will walk on rocks (Lherzolite) emerging from the depths of the Earth’s mantle and observe the carnivorous plants of the Bernadouze bog.

The walk is not long but the climb is very steep to reach the magnificent Abbey of Saint Martin du Canigou. We will evaluate the possibility of doing the loop via the trail depending on our fitness. Otherwise, no difficulty taking the track there and back.

Why not combine hiking and Roman art. The Pyrenees offer a multitude of possibilities and here is a great example. Departing from the small village of Boule d’Amont, we will walk through a Mediterranean forest in the shade of holm oaks. The lunch break will be at the picnic tables of the Serrabone priory (12th century) which the curious will visit while the others take a little nap or stroll in the botanical garden.
